Camino in France – Au Revoir Paris

Paris was just beginning to come alive as we walked to Gare de Lyon.

Today (Friday) marked our first day in the town of Le Puy, France – the official starting point of the Via Podiensis. An early morning walk led us to the train station (Gare de Lyon) where we caught the first of two trains to Le Puy.

Sunday we will begin our walk – 10 years after a spring walk along Spain’s Camino de Santiago ignited our passion for distance trekking.

Reg and I were all smiles after the challenging climb to O’Cebiero in Spain.

We’re older and we like to think wiser this time around. Originally, we had thought we’d take advantage of a luggage transfer service (because we are older) which would allow us to take more but carry less. Then we began to feel guilty. Truthfully, traveling with just a backpack that holds all our individual needs is not only empowering, but part of the fun.

While we remain loyal to our original red backpacks (even though they add a little extra weight) we hope our improved packing skills, lighter weight, quick-dry clothing and better, collapsible trekking poles will help keep us moving forward.

The Altra Olympus 5 trail runners will be put to the test.

If you ask any group of hikers “What are your favorite shoes?” a heated argument will erupt. Social media is filled with differing opinions on this subject.

Reg and I have both worn Altra shoes prior to this hike, but never for such a distance. Reviews are mixed, with many preferring the wildly popular Hoka brand. We’ll keep you updated on the state of our shoes and feet.

Meanwhile, we have a full day to explore Le Puy before hitting the trail and getting those shoes dirty.

There’s a pretty nice view out our hotel window.

  1. I’m proud of you both! The trek in Spain is on my bucket list. My name is Karla, I’m happy to read your blog! The two of you are doing exactly my dream! I’ll be curious your review of Altra’s. Due to many health challenges, I’ve switched up my shoes a lot. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you for following along. I hope you’ll, one day, live your dream too.
I am curious as to how the Altra brand soles holds up. And I’m prone to blisters. One day at a time! Sue

  2. Looking forward to your reports about your journey and your shoes … and then there was that fellow you ran into in the Sierras, who was trekking without shoes!

    1. Our shoes have remained on our feet and after our first day (of all uphill) are feeling good.

  3. Looks fun. I hope your Altras work out for you. I am not good with zero shoes and the altras gave me calf and achilles problems. I love my Hokas. If you have worn them before you are probably good with them. Have a grand time. Happy trails, Lori
