Camino in France – Can We Do This?

Day 3 – Monistrol to Saugues

After yesterday’s grueling, steep, downhill plunge over roots, rocks and a number of obstacles, all threatening to trip us up, we began to wonder if we’d made a terrible choice of treks. With temperatures in the mid-90s, we dragged into our hotel Monday afternoon.

Starting our early morning climb out of Monistrol.

First thing this morning (Tuesday) we were faced with the steepest climb of our route. Our host encouraged us to make an early start (I think he was worried about us), offered us an early breakfast and assured us the climb would be very steep, but the terrain would be doable.

We joined the crowd making the early climb to beat the heat.

In preparation, Reg unloaded some unnecessary items from his pack. He also made a couple small strap adjustments that made a world of difference. As a result, we arrived (without a problem) in Saugues right about noon. Just in time for lunch.

Day 4 – Saugues to Le Villeret

Our lodging last night (Wednesday) was in a hostel where we shared a Pilgrim meal – family style with 20 other Pilgrims. Our dinner companions were two Swedish women who wanted to speak English. Perfect!

Day 5 – Le Villeret to St. Alban

Temperatures remained in the 90s as the trail undulated between 3,500 feet and 4,300 feet of elevation. The good news is, we are finding that, yes, we can do this!

  1. Good job, in the 90’s at that altitude ? Is that normal this time of the year?

    1. I don’t know about normal, but it sure heats up in the middle of the day and late afternoon. I hope you’re getting along okay.

  2. It sounds very strenuous. I hope it get’s a little easier. When going up hill I always try to remember the old saying, “Whatever goes up, must come down!. I hope that applies to heat also…cooler weather has to be on the horizon. Thanks for the photos.

    1. We’ve been up and down too many times to count each day. But, all part of the fun. Thanks for following along.

Congratulations! No small feat! And you still have time and energy to send a blog with great photos, no less. May your packs be light, your shoes comfortable, and the trail smooth (though it may be steep!).
