Before settling into our drive south, we had one, quick detour to make. It was time to wage war against mosquitoes and more ammunition was needed. We dashed into the local Walmart and left with a bag full of paraphernalia guaranteed to repel the most persistent of the little bloodsuckers. That should do it!

I should know how misleading internet photo sites are, but still I expected the park to be surrounded by the rocky cliffs and boulders I’d seen highlighted. Where were the rocks?
We had all day Friday to search and explore, beginning with a trail at Mirror Lake State Park where we found one very large rock.
As it turned out, the best scenery was just a short walk from our campsite along the Rocky Arbor Loop Trail. The scenic loop took us down a steep set of stairs where we entered a different world.
The Wisconsin River once flowed through this area, creating a gorge and carving the rock outcroppings we see today. Now, fed by a small stream, ferns and tall grass create a meadow opposite towering sandstone cliffs. Definitely worth the trip up and down those stairs.
It’s been a treat getting to know so many state parks since leaving home. Each possesses its own quirks and unique personality, some more inviting than others.
We have two more state park reservations scheduled before we reach West Virginia.
What will we find when we arrive?
