Via Francigena Miles Add Up

Day 7

We left San Gimignano bright and early Thursday morning.

Oh my gosh, that was a long day! What did we do wrong? When we left San Gimignano we were prepared for a 14-mile day with 2,358 feet of ascent, a bigger/longer day than we like. By the time we finally dragged through the gates of Monteriggioni 8 1/2 hours later, it was 5:15. Reg clocked 19 miles and my GPS recorded 17+ miles. We are tired!

Monteriggioni sits atop a hill in the Siena Province of Tuscany. Built in the 13th century, this completely walled medieval city is so well preserved that, with the exception of some work completed in the 16th century, little has been done to the walls.

Monteriggioni finally popped into view.

As the sun sets, we call it a day. Tomorrow we’ll walk 12 miles to Siena. A little time to sleep in.

  1. What an amazing journey- the pictures show the beauty ! The view of the walled city as you approached really looked so impressive! Sue, I am wondering if your luggage is actually traveling ahead of you? I do love luggage..I saw this quote from Maria Shriver—“Dear God, help us walk this Earth as if it is holy ground. Help us use our voices, our hands, and our hearts to lift up one another and lead with kindness and love. Amen.” …Take care and keep us “ posted”

    1. Yes, we are having luggage shipped. It feels a little like cheating, but nice to have additional clothes besides hiking things. So far the suitcases have beat us to our accommodations each day. The walled city was very impressive. Can’t help but wonder how these massive structures were built way back when!
