Via Francigena Towering Tales

When we saw these two distant towers we were confident that we wouldn’t be climbing those hills.

Day 11

Day 11 began with a climb up to the town of San Quirico d’Orcia where a series of roller coaster ups and downs challenged us. Along the way we saw two towers in the distance and joked that “surely we won’t pass by them!”

Continuing on, the trail led us through the resort area of Bagno Vignoni. We felt a little underdressed at this upscale tourist spot, but took our time to check it out. Research shows that the hot springs have been used since Etruscan times. The 16th century square is home to the only aquatic piazza in Italy. Sadly there is no swimming in the square, but there are other options for guest and visitors to enjoy a therapeutic plunge.

Today’s section walk was devoid of any level trail segments. We slogged along up and down with eyes on the (once distant) tower. Sideswiping the tower (Rocco d’Orcia) and the town of Castiglione d’Orcia below it, we were reminded of how deceiving distance can be when traveling on foot.

We were still hunting our accommodation when I took this photo at 4:30 p.m. We had been walking since 7:30 a.m. and seemed to be in the middle of nowhere.

The Via Francigena wraps around the Agriturismo Passalacqua, making it a convenient stop for walkers. We had a wonderful stay, although a bit of a splurge. We happened to be there on Reg’s birthday, so it was a nice spot for a quiet celebration.

Day 12

Elena and her Mother put together a delicious breakfast for us. We were headed to Radicofani, a mere 10 miles. As we said our goodbyes, Elena pointed to the familiar distant knob we’d been keeping an eye on and said, “That’s Radicofani, where you’re going.”

Our stay in Radicofani was extremely comfortable. Our little apartment had a washer and we took full advantage of the chance to have really clean clothes.

Tomorrow we have some decisions to make…
