Via Francigena A Royal Breakfast

Day 16

Last night was the Friday Fish Festival in Bolsena and the town was hopping. We wandered about, found a quiet cafe to eat and people watch, topping off our evening with a walk down to the lake – Lago di Bolsena.

Breakfast on Day 16 was beautifully presented. The B & B was furnished like a museum. I would have liked to learn more about the house and how long our hosts had lived there, but communication was tricky so we simply enjoyed the experience. I must say, we did feel a bit royal in the grand breakfast room.

What a lovely breakfast. We felt like royalty.

Day 16 lay ahead with 2,100 feet of climbing on the 10-mile walk to Montefiascone. It sounded steep, but short. We hoped for the best.

The charming town of Bolsena was in our rear view mirror.

We climbed out of the city along with several large groups of day hikers. The area is a maze of little trails that branch off from the Francigena, so they largely disappeared when the going got tough.

The end is in sight. Montefiascone…uphill of course.

What came next was an unrelenting uphill climb through the suburbs of Montefiascone. We had reservations at a hotel that boasted years of Michelin ratings, so I was curious to see what sort of great deal we had.

We checked into our hotel, collected our luggage (yay!)- and discovered an elevator that took us to our 4th floor room. While the hotel was nice, we could see why those Michelin window stickers stopped in 2018. Our room was in need of a facelift, but we did have a beautiful view and another lovely breakfast.
