Day 3
It rained overnight, but by the time we woke up it was dry but blustery. There didn’t seem to be much hope of sunny weather today.

The walk out of town took us past a cricket club and along a nice, easy walking country road. Then we took a turn into yet another sheep pasture where we began our first climb of the day.

Described as looking like a beached whale, Belas Knap rises 18 feet high and measures 180 feet long. It dates back to 2500 BC and may have been used for several centuries. Archaeologists have found 38 human skeletal remains along with animal bones, flint and pottery.

After lunch we found ourselves fighting the wind as we struggled to the top of 1,083’ Cleeve Hill, the highest point in Gloucestershire and The Cotswold Hills. We were surprised to see a hillside/hilltop golf course among crowds of sheep and walkers. The views were astounding, but not enough to distract determined golfers.

Our day was just 12 miles, not a long day, but we felt as though we had walked in circles much of the time. What a relief to have finally reached our hotel where we could take our shoes off. The rain has returned but we are thankful to be warm and dry.
