Our Scottish Pilgrimage

Our family called this house a home for the year we spent in Scotland.

It was early in 1997 when Reg received word that he had been accepted into the Fulbright Teaching Exchange Program and that he and a Scottish teacher would be exchanging jobs and homes.

We’ve returned a few times, both with our boys and without, to wander the old neighborhood. This time Reg and I had a special treat.

While we were peeping through the vegetation an older gentleman came out of the garage. Reg quickly engaged him, explaining our connection to the house in an effort to ward off trespassing charges. Luckily for us, he couldn’t have been more gracious.

The house went up for sale not long after we returned to the states. The owner explained that he and his wife, who will soon celebrate their 60th anniversary, had bought the house in 1998 and launched a huge home improvement project.
With our outdoor tour complete, Reg and I were about to leave when he motioned us to follow him. He brought us inside (we were thrilled), introduced us to his wife and continued the tour, pointing out all they had done to bring the house up-to-date.

As we waved goodbye the wife said, “Come back soon, we’ll have a coffee.”

Who says “You can’t go home again?”
