Travel Surprises Are The Best

We made our reservations last winter. Planning ahead is a necessity when hoping to camp along the coasts of Oregon and Washington. Fortunately, our start date coincided with a blazing hot heatwave that settled over the Rogue Valley. Our first two nights were spent at Tugman State Park on the Oregon Coast where we walked around a part of the park’s Eel Lake – a 4-mile round trip. We enjoyed a couple early evening “wine times” catching up with friends Jackie and Jim who were also staying at the park.

The next stop was South Beach State Park, a few miles up the Oregon Coast, where we had a spectacularly large site somewhat sheltered from the overcrowded craziness on the opposite side of the road.

We settled in for five nights at this incredibly large campsite.

How did we spend our time? At first we wondered if we’d made a mistake reserving five nights along a part of the coast we were fairly familiar with, but we filled our days and even discovered some new surprises.

We packed up Saturday and continued north for a two-night stay at the Bay Center, Washington KOA. Again, we wondered if two nights would be one too many at this out-of-the-way stop off Highway 101…and again, we were surprised.
