Not Your Everyday Corn Dog

Leave it to Reg to sniff out one of the most unique and popular lunch spots on the Oregon Coast. And to perfectly time our drive north to reach the seaside town of Rockaway Beach at the lunch hour. We had to stop.

There are nearly 100 years of history behind this tasty treat. The Pronto Pup made its debut in 1930 and was an immediate hit with hungry Oregonians.

As corny as it sounded, George and Versa Boyington’s hot dog on a stick was a smash hit.

We added Pronto Pup to our list of happy surprises and climbed back in the truck for the drive to Washington. What will we find next?

  1. I should note that Pronto Pup is a fixture at the Minnesota State Fair, which had a total attendance of 1,925,904 in 2024 – probably many of whom ate a Pup (or two…). Who knew the Pup got started in Oregon?

    1. Surprisingly, there is a lot of information online regarding the history. The Rockaway Beach location is independently owned and opened in 2016.

      1. One of the largest franchised Pronto Pup booths in the Midwest is the one at the annual Minnesota State Fair. I don’t find it too surprising that Pronto Pups make up roughly 55% of the hot dogs sold each year at the fair.

We were at an event last week that had bite size corn dogs as appetizers. I hadn’t had corn dog in decades! I think they are making a “comeback”.
