Back in the late 1960s I’d hurry home from school every afternoon to catch the latest episode of Dark Shadows, ABCs wildly popular gothic soap opera. The fictional town of Collinsport was home to Collinwood mansion where the unusual Collins family resided. Viewers got to know (among others) the sinister Barnabas Collins, a vampire, Angelique, the beautiful but ruthless witch and Quentin Collins, the cursed werewolf. Reviewers called it cheesy, campy or melodramatic…but the series enjoyed a good long run from 1966-1971.

Almost 35 years later, vampires made headlines again, this time with a new generation. The first book of the Twilight Saga hit the bookshelves in 2005. The story centers around Belle, a teenager who moves from Arizona to Forks, Washington. With themes including coming-of-age, romance and the supernatural, the book quickly caught the attention of young adults.

Fast forward to 2025 and this young adult vampire series remains popular. However, Forks, Washington is not a fictional place, but a real town where fans can visit and explore everything about the Twilight series, real or imagined.

We’re out on the coast, not far from Forks, Washington.

This is where we’ve found ourselves this week. Our intention is to explore Olympic National Park, but we’ve found ourselves camping in the heart of Twilight country where vampires roam. I guess there will be no evening walks for us.

    1. We had just one TV growing up so there were several shows that I didn’t get to watch. Mod Squad was one, Gidget and Flying Nun were two others. But I did get to watch the Monkees. 🙂
