Olympic National Park – Coastal Walks

We chose to do the Third Beach hike first. Parking is limited due to the popularity of this trail with backpackers who have multiple day permits. Day hikers tend to get what’s left. For that reason, we chose to walk to the trailhead along a paved path from our campsite, turning the 1.8-mile walk into a 7-mile journey. Lucky for us we packed lunch.
Once we reached the beach we wove our way through piles of driftwood logs that littered the end of the trail. Perched on a log that served as our lunch bench, we people-watched until some unusual splashing seemed to be creating a disturbance offshore. Could it have been whales? Killer whales? Maybe, but with our binoculars safely tucked away back home we couldn’t be sure.

Second Beach Trail was our next quick walk. Although it was closer to our campsite, we chose to drive, taking advantage of a large overflow parking lot.

Second Beach.

Reg headed out on his own Saturday morning to hike the Hole-In-The-Wall Trail. I opted to stay behind with the intention of doing whatever I wanted. He did get some good shots of yet another popular Olympic National Park hike.
