Timberline Trekking Treats

Mt. Hood looms behind us. Reg and Andrew pause along the trail. The Timberline Lodge is a National Historic Landmark, and served as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in the movie The Shining. And it offers delicious desserts!

It's been awhile since we've taken a good old fashioned American road trip, so we jumped at the chance to visit our son and daughter-in-law in Portland, Oregon. Car trips mean no luggage restrictions, so we loaded up with anything and everything we thought we might need and headed north.

Our first sunny day found us exploring Mt. Hood, the highest mountain (at 11,240 feet) in Oregon. We posed for a quick photo by a Pacific Crest Trail mileage marker, then continued on for a couple miles around the mountain to a forested lookout point. According to Wikipedia, Mt. Hood is considered the most likely Oregon volcano to erupt, so we walked fast!

We have fond memories of the Timberline Lodge, having stayed there about 25 years ago. It's a beautiful place, built on a grand scale. Eager to soak up the atmosphere, we settled into comfy couches in the bar where we enjoyed coffee and dessert!
