We caught an early ferry to explore Mackinac Island.
Charming Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron, just off the east coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Established in 1895, it’s Michigan’s first state park and offers something for everyone…except car enthusiasts. The automobile ban began in 1898 and remains in effect today. Visitors see the park on foot, bike, horse or in one of the horse-drawn carriages or taxis.
While there’s no charge for using your feet, other transportation is available for a price.Even trash collection is done with horse and wagon.
Built in 1887, Grand Hotel is a historic reminder of old world elegance. We poked around the lobby, enjoyed the view from the veranda and dreamed of days gone by.
For hundreds of years, pints have been poured, battles fought and ships have sailed.
I fell in love with the big, beautiful historic homes lining the streets.
No cars. What a treat. It’s hard to picture how historic towns were back in the day when the streets are parked up with cars. I’m adding Mackinac to my must see list.
I love visiting Mackinaw Island; I’ve been there many times. Biking around the perimeter is a nice way to enjoy it! Actually Kathy & I did that years ago when I still lived in IL!
We thought about taking our bikes, but decided against it…since we just did a day trip. Really glad we were able to spend the day when it was not crowded.
So impressed with how much of the island you covered in a day. We stayed at the Grand Hotel for one night about a year and a half ago. Wonderful experience. One and done, but what a unique place.
Lovely! No cars!
