Camino in France – Over the Hump

We’ve had some long days, 21 miles today (day 25) and over 50 miles in the last three days, but we are over the hump…more than halfway.

Day 23 – Cahors to Lascabanes

What a crazy climb out of Cahors. A flight of stairs, definitely not for the faint of heart, brought us quickly high above the city.
We walked up and down steep, rocky slopes and through beautiful farmland – like the fields of cantaloupe pictured below.

It was 3:00 and our lodging was still 2-1/2 miles away when we stopped for a cold drink at a trailside rest stop. We must have looked pathetic. The owner (above middle and her partner right) took pity on us and called our host to come pick us up. Our host David, on the left, showed up in that quintessential French car. He loaded us up and deposited us at his charming country compound. It was a wild ride!

Day 24 – Lascabanes to Lauzerte

Somewhere along the trail on day 24, we passed our halfway point. Cause for celebration for sure, but many more miles to go.

Day 25 – Lauzerte to Moissac

Just a very long day!

  1. You guys are animals! Impressive, and better you than me. Hope you allowed some time to enjoy the beauty of that bridge and river at Cahors. We remember well the brutal climb out of there, which we did years ago (younger!) but not as many miles in the day, nor day after day. Our friends and I accused Greg of taking us on a death march!! I also recognize those pink umbrellas. Gaillac? It was the end of the road for us on one trip.
Stay healthy and strong and “bon continuation” as they say

    1. The mileage hasn’t always been our choice. We had a company plan our lodging. Some days are longer than we’d like. All sounded quite doable from our living room back home. The heat has been a factor. Afternoons are still heating up. But we’ve met nice people and haven’t felt isolated by our lack of French as we’d been warned of. All part of the adventure right?
Not yet sure the significance of the pink umbrellas…some sort of October event I think.
