The International Great Crate Race

Our journey back to the West Coast began with a visit with friends Jeannie and Jeff. Our timing was perfect to catch the tail end of Rockland’s 75th Annual Lobster Festival.

We had two days to visit with friends and former neighbors Jeannie and Jeff.

The 5-day August festival runs Wednesday through Sunday and is jam packed with all the food (lots of lobster), events and entertainment you’d expect from a small town festival.
We missed the Saturday parade, but had front row seats for the wildly popular “International Great Crate Race,” one of the few sporting events where the little guy or gal finishes first.

A string of 50 wooden lobster crates tied together across a portion of Rockland’s harbor create the racetrack. Contestants must be quick, well-balanced and willing to get dunked. Once across the crates, runners must turn around and go back…and keep repeating until they finally slip off into the water. The winner is the runner who crosses the most crates.

Jeannie’s photos and video captured the fun Sunday afternoon.

Contestants compete in weight categories. Check out 11-year old Mave’s winning score. She crossed the crates almost 40 times before getting dunked.

    1. One of the craziest contests I’ve ever seen.
