All our reservations for this trip, from the time we left home, through Canada and back to Maine, were made last spring. While it was reassuring to know there would be a place to stay at the end of each day, it was bit of a roulette game regarding space and quality.

As we drive back across the U.S., we’re taking our chances, booking one day ahead. After securing a site at the Iowa campground pictured below, Reg put down his phone and said, “Well, this should be interesting.”
A sketchy approach up a steep, partially paved one-lane road quickly became a downhill gravel plunge and had us both second-guessing our choice. We arrived to see the off-road vehicle crowd engaged in a lively cornhole tournament. Hmmm…these were not our regular peeps. After paying $40.00 (cash only!) we settled in, hoping the party wouldn’t go all night.

As it turned out, everyone was welcoming and friendly, the games broke up early enough and the view was tremendous. We spent the afternoon chatting with our neighbor, a single woman who has been traveling and working from her trailer for the last three years. One of my favorite stops.
