Via Francigena Tests Our Readiness

Day 1

Rain ushered us out of Lucca Friday morning. The guidebook mapped out a city walk for today, but also suggested an alternate, rural (muddy) route with some climbing. We chose the easy, flat city trek for the first day out. This was probably the right choice given how tired our legs and backs felt at the end of the day.

Near the end of the day we finally veered off the pavement for a short stretch before returning to the city streets that would lead to the town of Altopascio, our stop for the night.

Day 2

The sun was shining as we set off from the Hotel Paola. We found breakfast in a downtown bar – definitely a local hangout, but the owners were patient with our Italian and they offered delicious pastries.

Tomorrow is Easter Sunday. We’re not sure we’ll find anything to eat once we leave our hotel. Just in case, we bought 2 tangerines, an apple and a focaccia bread. That may be lunch and dinner both.
