Via Francigena Draws To An End

Day 21

Reg and I are feeling like old trail horses heading back to the barn. Just two more days of walking and we will be in Rome, a bittersweet destination. The Via Francigena has been much more challenging than we expected and most days the mileage exceeded our predictions. Nearly perfect weather, comfortable accommodations, luggage that arrived, almost like magic each day and wonderful people combined to make this an unforgettable experience for us.

The guidebook suggested a shortcut for our Day 21 walk. It led to a beautiful, peaceful section (above photos) that was the best part of the day. We continued on, climbing up to the town of La Storta. Our hotel was a few miles beyond, requiring a noisy city walk along a busy road.

We had a warm welcome at our hotel. We also had an elevator, a rare treat on this trip.

Day 22

The last day. Destination Rome. We had about 10 miles of walking, but we expected it would be a bit more. The morning took us along a busy city street with people going to work, city buses, school buses, ambulances and police all rushing to somewhere. At last we entered a park where we left the street noise behind.

A little more city walking led us to another park that climbed high enough to give us a birds-eye view of Rome. We had our first glimpse of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

It was a beautiful day to walk into Rome.
And just like that our journey was finished. Our starting point in Lucca seems long ago, yet at the same time, just like yesterday.

A big “Thank you” to all of you who followed along, commented and liked our posts. You all help and encourage us when the hills get steep, the feet begin to hurt or we are just plain tired. I hope you’ll follow along with us on our next adventure.

Well done Reg and Sue. Not a trace of fatigue in your faces.

I trust you’ll take a few days break before tackling the next challenge. The Cotswold Way will be a pushover in comparison to Via Francigena.

    1. Thank you Frank and Adele. Happy Mother’s Day to you too Adele. I don’t know whether it’s because of the pope selection or just a busy tourist time, but Rome is uncomfortably crowded. We’re off for a rest in York, England before heading out to the Cotswolds.
