Adventures in Great Britain-York Minster

Although it is a cathedral and the seat of the Archbishop of York, the term “minster” is used to honor important churches in England, ones that were once missionary teaching churches.
York Minster was built between the years 1230-1472 and is a Protestant Denomination.

York Minster soars above the Historic City Center of York.

We bought our tickets to wander through York Minster and to make the central tower climb, 275 heart-pumping steps up to the top of the 235’ tower. If charging a fee to enter seems just little too touristy for a place of worship, keep in mind that, according to the official yorkminster.org site, it costs £33,000 a day to run York Minster.

We had visited York Minster with our young children nearly 30 years ago. Was it worth revisiting? Definitely! If you find yourself in York, don’t miss the opportunity…and climb the tower if you can.

i’ve been to York and probably to the Cathedral, but I did not know the origin of the word minster. Thanks for that bit of history.

    1. You’re very welcome. Another little tidbit of information to store away for your next trivia competition.
