Walks, Wildflowers and Wine

Brad and his girlfriend Ashley kept us pretty darn busy during our recent visit to Chico. Ashley planned an action packed Saturday, beginning with a wildflower walk atop North Table Mountain near Oroville, California.

Formed by ancient lava flows, and looking suspiciously like our own Upper and Lower Table Rocks just outside Medford, Oregon, it rises 1582 feet above the valley floor. The wildflowers were spectacular!

We meandered along a series of interconnected trails, eventually arriving at Hollow Falls where we cautiously followed Ashley down the face the cliff you see behind us in the above photo. Fortunately, we discovered a trail that led us easily (and safely) back up to the top.

After a quick bite to eat, we took a short drive north of Chico for some wine tasting at The Abbey of our Lady of New Clairvaux, located in the tiny town of Vina. The history of the land dates back to 1843 when it was a part of a 22,000-acre Mexican land grant. Established in in 1955, the monastery sits on 600 acres and is one of only 17 Trappist-Cistercian monasteries in the United States.

Our tasting included a variety of whites and reds, all of which were quite good. Even Brad, who loves his beer, admitted the reds were pretty good.

New Clairvaux Vineyard offers a unique setting and is well worth the detour when traveling through Northern California.

A different kind of change in Chico

Can you spare some change? These machines in downtown Chico, California, ask passersby to reduce panhandling and help the needy. Feed the machine a few coins or a donation from your credit/debit card. A green light blinks for a time, depending on the amount of your donation. The money goes to local agencies that help those in need.

Tricks and Treats in Chico

For me, it has always been a treat to visit Chico where I spent my college years. When our son Brad decided to attend school there, I was thrilled to have a reason to make an occasional weekend trip to what I consider the quintessential college town. Many Chico State grads dream of living there forever. The trick is finding a job that allows them the opportunity to do so. Brad is one of the lucky ones.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, the second largest craft brewery in the United States, was founded in Chico in 1979. Reg and I have learned a lot about the company since Brad began working there and it's all good. Brad loves his job and we are able to continue to make an occasional weekend jaunt to visit him in one of my favorite towns.

With close to 20 beers on tap, it's fun to dine at the Sierra Nevada Taproom and Restaurant.

The Saturday Market is a popular downtown event.

Brad took us to the haunted corn maze Saturday night. We met all kinds of frightening folks as we wondered through the 10-acre maze.

Downtown was quiet Sunday morning. After breakfast we said our goodbyes and headed home.
